Top Austin Ice Cream Spots
Okay, okay, I know this may be a fruitless task. There are so many wonderful places in the ATX for ice cream. But with National Ice Cream Day in full force, you better believe I’m going to try to rank my favorite Austin ice cream spots. Keep in mind this could literally fluctuate daily. Sometimes I’m craving one place that may not cross my brain even 24 hours later. It’s a delicate subject, these ice creameries.
I’ve already ranked my top ice cream flavors and my favorite places for milkshakes in Austin. You’ll notice the occasional overlap, but again, there are so many great ice creameries, I’ve gotta give credit where it’s due.
Here’s why this may be chaotic: my favorite Austin ice cream spots might not be your jam, or maybe you’ve tried somewhere I’ve never been. That’s the beauty of this list – I’ll share some tasty treats I’ve enjoyed, and you can yell at me to go try somewhere else. It’s life at its finest. Why not dive in?
5. Austin Scoops
Austin Scoops makes a tasty milkshake, but I like their ice cream in its pure form just a bit more. The flavors range from your basic (cookies ‘n’ cream) to more creative, like a chocolate espresso. Even better – they’re offering a buy one get one on scoops to celebrate National Ice Cream Day. So…after you read this list, stop by and eat up.
4. Lick Honest Ice Creams
I’ve seen people dare to stack four or five scoops on their cone when visiting Lick. That is a BOLD move, but I admire the panache. I’m a big fan of the chocolate cone pictured above, which adds just a little bit of oomph to an already impressive offering. There are about a dozen new flavors Lick has unveiled this summer, including this blackberry, lime, and basil gem. If you try them all I will give you a HEARTY high-five.

3. Dolce Neve Gelato
We’re talking about ice cream things to do in Austin, but you may think you’ve somehow teleported to Italy. This place is goo-ooood! I suppose gelato is in its own realm, but I’m gonna lump it in with the ice creams here because I want you to know about it. There’s a lovely little outdoor area, but of course you want to try the goodness within. The gelatos are light and airy and won’t leave you feeling like you just ate a crater – a big plus in my book. It’s easy to walk right past this place, but don’t do it! Stop on in for a scoop or seven.

2. Amy’s Ice Creams
It’s funny – Amy’s Ice Creams doesn’t really offer the most photogenic scoops. But what it DOES offer is a constantly rotating menu of delicious options. The Belgian Chocolate and Mexican Vanilla are staples, but sometimes you need to just jump headfirst into one of their wackier selections. Have you ever wondered what Big Red gum would taste like mixed with gummy bears? Or if Shiner’s Bock was an ice cream upon which you could sprinkle graham crackers and marshmallows? If you dream it, you can achieve it. And isn’t that what this country was founded on?

1. Cow Tipping Creamery
If you really wanted to, you could make your cup or cone heavy enough that it would actually tip over. That’s a dreadful waste of ice cream, but I understand if you’ve gotta just do you. Anyway, I’ve only been to this Austin ice cream spot twice, but that’s only because I recently learned about it. And it’s a true game-changer. There’s always vanilla, always chocolate, and always one rotating flavor. But the real highlights are the stackers, which are like ice cream sundaes on crack. I mean that in the best way possible.
Do you agree with my list? What spots am I missing? Let me know your ice cream in Austin dreams and then let’s go check ’em out.
