Where to Find the Top Milkshakes in Austin

If I’ve learned anything from living in this city, it’s that people have very strong opinions about their ice cream concoctions. That, of course, boils over into milkshakes, which can be QUITE divisive. Naturally, I embrace this chaos, which is why I’m including my top milkshakes in Austin as part of the Austin Food Blogger Alliance 2024 City Guide.

Here’s what I’m looking for in a milkshake: I need it to be filling without making me feel sick. We ain’t looking for anything too heavy. It needs to have a distinct flavor. It can’t cost $100. And obviously, it has to be good. To be fair, I don’t think I’ve ever truly had a terrible milkshake. But some are certainly better than others. And that’s what we’re all here for.

In even more exciting news, I was recently featured in Toast’s article on the top food blogs in Austin. There are plenty of impressive folks on the list, and it’s super cool to be named alongside them. In fact, maybe I’ll go get a milkshake to celebrate…

Anyway, here we go with the list: the top milkshakes in Austin!

Chocolate Cherry – 24 Diner

600 N. Lamar Blvd., Suite 200, Austin, TX 78703

The saddest thing about working in a non-downtown location is that I’m not within walking distance of 24 Diner and their wonderful milkshakes. The chocolate cherry is probably my favorite choice. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, though, even if it seems like a more obscure flavor, like maple. Ain’t nothing wrong with a little experimenting.

Oreo Cookies and Cream — Hopdoddy and Lil’ Doddy

Multiple locations around Austin

This is such a classic milkshake flavor, but Hopoddy (and the smaller Lil’ Doddy) does it better than just about anyone else in town. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can add a lil’ booze to your shakes. Alternatively, this particular shake is a great dipping vessel for Hopdoddy’s terrific fries.

Cookie Butter Milkshake – P. Terry’s Burger Stand

Multiple locations around Austin

My biggest gripe with this milkshake is that it’s not available year-round. There has never been a time when I’ve been like, “You know what? I don’t want a cookie butter milkshake.” The correct time to crave a cookie butter milkshake is all the time. But since P. Terry’s doesn’t provide said milkshake all the time, I have to dock this milkshake just a little bit. OR, maybe the scarcity makes it even better. Who’s to say?

Salted Caramel – Alamo Drafthouse

Multiple locations around Austin (and beyond!)

Soon after I discovered I enjoyed caramel, I poured myself an entire bowl of it. It’s good with ice cream, my stupid young brain thought. It must be fantastic on its own! No, dummy, it is not. Perhaps this goes without saying, but I did not consume that entire bowl and still became quite ill in the tummy region. Luckily, it didn’t deter me from trying caramel in far smaller doses. And that’s a good thing because then I got to sample this delight from Alamo Drafthouse.

Ain’t nothing better than indulging in a milkshake whilst taking in a movie on the silver screen. If you’re feeling more festive, give the Grasshopper a try, which pairs crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and vanilla ice cream in one rollicking good time.

Belgian Chocolate + Something Ridiculous — Amy’s Ice Creams

Multiple locations around Austin

Amy’s is my go-to for a solid scoop of ice cream. However, the rotating menu makes it hard to accurately predict what flavors will be available for your next visit. Belgian Chocolate is always a staple, so make sure to include it in addition to one of the more “out there” choices. I’m fond of going the s’more route (graham crackers and marshmallows, plus caramel or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups if you want to sizzle the flavor). But again, this is ALL ABOUT YOU, so you just pick whatever’s calling your name.

And there you go – the top milkshakes in Austin. What do you think? Is my list spot-on, or am I completely nuts? Tell me your favorite spots!

You know what goes even better with milkshakes? Podcasts (and perhaps making your milkshakes a little more adult with alcohol)! I host the Good People, Cool Things podcast, and I’d love for you to check it out. It’s the perfect complement to keep your good time going strong.
