Let’s Go To Grizzelda’s! A Restaurant Review

I’m consistently impressed by the Austin food scene. It seems like every other week, a new concept is popping up. Whether it’s a twist on pizza, a Texas take on European food, or something in between, this city always pushes the envelope in the best way. But there’s always going to be a soft spot in Austin for Tex-Mex. After all, it’s one of the core food groups of the state of Texas. And Grizzelda’s is an East Austin gem that’s doing a wonderful job in the Tex-Mex arena.

After spending a weekend in Chicago for a bachelor party, I returned to Austin just in time for an AFBA happy hour at Grizzelda’s. It was my first time there, but hoo boy, it will not be the last. Let’s hop into things!

Whatcha Drinking?

Any Tex-Mex place worth its salt will have a quality margarita. Heh, see what I did there? Salt goes on margaritas, you see? Man, jokes are way funnier when you explain them.

The point is, Grizzelda’s has some pretty magnificent margs. During our visit, we got to sample both those fashionably pink concoctions above (the “Grizz Fizz” – thanks, Herradura Tequila!) as well as the more classic, yellow, “Marg Simpson” style beverages. They were both ultra refreshing, which is a key factor when the average temperature is 104 degrees.

But don’t fret if you’re not craving a marg (or any beverage). Check this out.

Grizzelda’s Meat Is ON POINT

No exaggeration: the beef at Grizzelda’s is among the best I’ve had in all of Texas. Braised Jacoby Beef is a local product, and my goodness does it show. It tastes like ribs that just melts off the bone, but in cubed beef form. Get you some ASAP.

The fajitas are also super tasty and the tortillas come in real cute little pouches. If you want to recreate these tasty morsels at home, you can even score the holders from NellywithWings. The chicken isn’t at all dry (a HUGE plus) and you’ll get all the fixings you could ever ask for.

For pescatarians, you could do a lot worse than the beer-battered fish tacos. But why would you actively choose to do worse? You’ve got an outstanding option right in front of you. Sometimes the easiest choice is the best.

Additional Notes

I like when happy hour is actually more than one hour. Grizzelda’s doesn’t disappoint in that regard. From 5 to 7 pm Tuesday through Friday, you can score $7 margs and cocktails plus $2 off any glasses of wine. Additionally, the happy hour menu features small bites ranging from $3 to $7. Everything I sampled was more baller than Tracy McGrady’s 13 points in 33 seconds, so you’re in good hands.
