Animated Alka Seltzer Commercial: Footnotes
Alka Seltzer has been around since 1931. It’s nearly 100 years old, and if you haven’t used it yourself, you likely know someone who did. I don’t remember seeing an Alka Seltzer commercial on television in the past decade, but they have some classic spots. My personal favorite, though, is this animated ad about food fighting back.
Trying to Get to Sleep
This Alka Seltzer commercial starts off innocently enough. It poses a simple statement: it’s hard to fall asleep when some of the foods you’ve eaten insist on staying up past your bedtime. We see a sad man winding an alarm clock. Surely he’s thinking of better days, when he WASN’T so full of food. But this thought is quickly interrupted…
But Really, How Much Food Are You Eating, Man?!
…by TWENTY CONSECUTIVE SECONDS of angry-looking food jumping out from underneath the bed. The cheese is furious, the pickle is rocking a katana, and the bacon is a snake, for some reason.
In fact, this man has eaten a comical amount of food. Sure, there are some repeats. We see multiple Swiss cheeses and what appears to be a pair of baby turnips. The question still remains, though – how much has this man consumed throughout the day?
The furious food storms across the bed, looking to overtake the man. His mind must be racing. The Impractical Jokers once posed a hypothetical about being crushed to death by a giant piece of celery; I doubt this man has ever seriously considered his own demise via food attack.
The Alka Seltzer Commercial Solution
Turns out all you need to get rid of those nasty food creatures is a long finger and a stern “OUT!” Baseball umpires would be great at that. Oh, I suppose the Alka Seltzer commercial is also saying you need Alka Seltzer to help.
I still can’t tell what piece of lingering food the man removes from his bed before turning out the lights. Let’s just say it’s a rogue ravioli. The message here is clear, though: don’t let food into your bed. It could be disastrous – unless you have Alka Seltzer to fight back.
