Places: Gourdough’s Doughnuts, Beer, & Cocktails

If you love donuts (or doughnuts, if you’d like to add a few letters), this is THE place to feast. Gourdough’s has a few different locations around Austin, from the food truck on South 1st to the public house on South Lamar, but one thing remains consistent: you’re going to get a huge helping of whatever you order. And chances are you’ll score a donut topped with some magnificent things.

Highlights: Donuts. Lots of them. Also, the beer selection is pretty impressive.

Everything is tasty, but the dessert donuts are the highlights. My personal favorites are The Freebird – cheesecake filling and cream cheese icing on a donut topped with graham cracker crumbles, fresh strawberries and blackberries – and The Puddin’ – a donut topped with cream cheese icing and vanilla pudding with fresh bananas and vanilla wafers. One of these behemoths is enough to share with a friend, but if you’re really feeling ambitious, try to tackle it yourself.

Gourdough's Freebird Donut
The Freebird donut won’t last nearly as long as the song.

At the brick and mortar locations, Gourdough’s also offers a variety of appetizers and entrees, and yes, even donut salads. The Mother Clucker is one of the simplest choices on the menu; think chicken and waffles, but with a fried donut in place of the waffle and an incredible honey butter sauce for dippin’. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and savory. The Ron Burgundy is also a fan favorite. Stay classy with Angus beef, bacon, fried egg, guacamole, cheese, tomato, and mayonnaise all piled in between two donut buns. And before you get too worried, these buns are more like fried dough as opposed to the hefty dessert burgers described above. Because putting all those burger contents in between, say, chocolate buns would just be preposterous, wouldn’t it? *waves pinky finger in the air*

To top your meal off, order one of the many beers on tap (gotta give a shout out to the always tasty Live Oak HefeWeizen) or imbibe on a hot chocolate. I hear they pair pretty well with donuts. Or just go to town on a treat or two. You’ve earned it.
