Footnotes: Oscar Mayer Bologna Commercial

As a child, I used to be all about the bologna life. If you asked me now, I probably could not tell you the last time I consumed the cured meat. But back then? Bologna and ketchup sandwiches were essentially a part of my daily life. With crust on the bread, of course. Any other way is preposterous.

An Oscar Mayer Commercial To Help You Spell

The OG bologna, of course, is featured in Oscar Mayer’s “My Bologna Has a First Name” spot from 1973. This commercial is simply a kid shout-spelling, yet it’s super effective. I highly doubt this young lad has any actual fishing skill – just look at how nonchalantly he’s holding that rod!

Another interesting wrinkle is the pronunciation of “bologna.” The kid says it like “baloney,” and the narrator says it like “bullona.” Which is it, Oscar Mayer?!

There’s also a delightful parody of this commercial on The Simpsons when Rainier Wolfcastle sings “Mein Bratwurst Has a First Name” with a much longer surname. Such cleverness.

Anyway, this jingle will get stuck in your head, and I will not apologize for it.
