Footnotes: Mentos Commercial – Through the Car

I’ve been on a pretty heavy 90s kick lately, from music to movies to TV shows. Let’s add television ads to that list, as the Mentos commercial below is QUITE delightful. Really, every Mentos commercial is fantastic, encouraging us to get into all sorts of mischief, so long as we flash a Mentos and a knowing smile.

“Through the Car” Mentos Commercial

This one below is my favorite of the bunch, though, because of the incredibly low stakes of the adventure. In another Mentos commercial, you might see a man sit on a freshly painted bench before a job interview or a woman rip her dress en route to a fancy movie premiere. The predicament here? A man is walking across the street with his friends, but then gets boxed out by a car that pulls up too close behind the car in front of it. That’s the whole drama.

Our protagonist does some quick thinking, though! No, he doesn’t wait for the next light cycle, or even simply walk around the back of the car. No, after popping a Mentos, he gets the nerve to go right through the obstacle in his path. He opens up the offending driver’s back door, crawling on through before emerging on the other side to his excited friends.

Reaching Your Dreams

Everyone in this Mentos commercial has a callous disregard for other people’s personal space. The driver, who’s on a car phone – an eerie prediction of what present-day driving is like – doesn’t care about either the car in front of him or the pedestrians who have the right of way. But actually getting into someone’s car? This isn’t Lyft. This Hulk Brogan that gets in the car just makes a “yep, that’s what you get” face as he wiggles from one door to the other.

The driver is confused, but not for long. Once he sees the offending car intruder was just eating a couple of Mentos, all is forgiven. Let that be a lesson, kids: always keep a roll of Mentos on you. As this Mentos commercial clearly demonstrates, it’ll get you out of any sticky situation. AND you’ll have fresh breath. Win-win.
