Top Ramen Spots in Austin (Updated for 2024)

About 87% of the time when you’re in Austin, you’re either VERY cold (Austin does love its sideways rain and wind in the winter), or it’s extremely hot outside, which means the AC is being blasted everywhere. But one way or another, it’s gonna get chilly. Luckily, Austin has a barrage of excellent ramen spots around town to warm your belly and make your soul smile. You can also grab some Austin sushi or other traditional dishes while you’re at it.

As part of the Austin Food Blogger Alliance City Guide, let’s hop into a bowl (or several).

Ramen Tatsu-ya

Multiple locations across Austin

The OG of ramen spots in Austin, Ramen Tatsu-ya is still the best ramen out there. Its only major flaw is that the indoor seating tends to be fairly small, so if you hit it at peak times, you’ll be strugg-a-ling to find a seat. But the quality makes up for any seating issues that may arise. The tonkatsu broth is a delight and is yummy on a warm night, and downright life-changing on a frosty one.

Komé

5301 Airport Blvd. #100, Austin, TX 78751

Komé loses a few points because its ramen bowls are only available for lunch. But hot dog (or I guess hot ramen, in this case), it’s a tasty bowl. You’ll find all your standard fare here, plus they have vegan-friendly options if your diet is more restrictive.

Kanji Ramen

12636 Research Blvd. C101, Austin, TX 78759

For my way-up-north folks, it’s hard to beat Kanji Ramen in Barrington Oaks. Pop over to their website, and you’ll find very little — if any — frills. That’s because Kanji is spending so much time cooking delicious soups for you, with each batch getting more than 24 hours of TLC. The signature ramen is a blend of pork bone and soy broth and includes chashu, ajitama egg, wood-ear mushroom, grilled corn, nori, and a handful of other tasty accouterments.

Kemuri Tatsu-ya

2713 E. 2nd St, Austin, TX 78702

One of the newer additions to the Austin ramen scene, Kemuri Tatsu-ya is a unique lil’ blend of Japanese and Tex-Mex. The end result is a delicious combination of flavors. The BBQ tsukemen pairs barbecue, smoked jalapeño and a super spicy sauce. It’ll have you breathing fire, for sure. If you’ve ever aspired to be a dragon, this is the best place to hit up.

Michi Ramen

Multiple locations around Austin

In a dangerous turn of events, there is a Michi Ramen within walking distance of my office. During the several chilly nights we’ve had this winter, it’s been so clutch. And is ramen best when it’s mere feet away? I say yes. Of course, I will always add an ajitama egg to my order – they’re incredible – and the Texas bowl is a meaty feast that includes pork ribs and barbecue sauce. Because nothing says “America” like ramen.

Pro tip based on an experience I had one time: Order your ramen from the wrong location. Sure, it’s an extra 40-minute drive, but the very nice people at Michi may just give you a few extra mochi for your trouble. And that is darn good mochi.
