Footnotes: McDonald’s Showdown Commercial – Larry Bird vs. Michael Jordan
McDonald’s has had plenty of advertising over the years, but its most memorable spot is probably the McDonald’s Showdown Commercial, featuring Larry Bird and Michael Jordan facing off in a ridiculous game of H-O-R-S-E, with the winner getting the satisfaction of inhaling a sweet, juicy Big Mac.
I remember seeing this commercial as a kid and LOVING it. See what I did there? Spouting off McDonald’s quotes without even trying. Basketball is my favorite sport, and I spent many an hour at the park or gym trying to knock down incredible shot after incredible shot. When I finally nailed something ridiculous – like an underhand off-the-wall shot that grazes the top of the backboard and drops in – LIFE WAS GOOD.
Shoot the J…SHOOT IT
We can all agree MJ gets the short end of the stick on his deal. It’s his Big Mac after all. AND fries? Larry Bird probably ate a dry turkey sandwich for lunch, and now he’s taking it out on Jordan, just because MJ was a relative newbie in the league at the time.
In addition to the outrageous degree of difficulty of the shots in the McDonald’s showdown commercial, the other notable thing here is Jordan’s outfit. Just look at it! It zigs, it zags, it’s got every color on the rainbow. It certainly can’t be comfortable to shoot hoops in, yet His Royal Airness isn’t deterred. The only downside here is we never find out who wins. I’d like to think they both went and split a kids meal, then fought over the toy.
