Footnotes: Ken-L Ration Dog Food Commercial
Old commercials are just the best. This blast from the past, the Ken-L Ration Dog Food commercial, will get a pleasant enough jingle stuck in your head. If you’re not humming “My Dog’s Better Than Your Dog” by the end of the ad, I just feel sorry for you.
But are any of these dogs really better than the others? They all appear to be pretty much identical. I’d rather take the animated dog at the start of the ad, as he eats an entire can of dog food (including the can) in one sitting. That’s some spectacular intestinal fortitude. Granted, I’d go broke pretty quickly since I’d have to keep up with the one can per meal pace that the Ken-L Kartoon Dog (not his real name) has set.
The Ken-L Ration Dog Food Commercial’s Secret Ingredient
Ken-L’s main ingredient was advertised as “lean, red meat.” What does that actually mean? According to this advertisement of the product from a 1950 Toledo Blade newspaper, said ingredient is “nutritious U.S. Government inspected horse meat.” Licking your chops already in anticipation, I can tell.
Alas, the Ken-L brand went defunct sometime around the turn of the century. But wait! You’re in luck, as you can still buy Ken-L memorabilia from Retro Brands here. Fido would be proud.
There’s also a line near the end of this dog food commercial song where the kids admit their mom goes to the store and comes back home with A ZILLION cans – and sometimes even more. That’s not even a quantifiable number, but it’s a sure sign of shopping addiction. I worry about this mother. Or maybe she was one of the first extreme couponers, in which case, I instead worry about the people standing in line behind her at the store.
