Celebrate National Cookie Day with the Top Five Cookies (And These Fun Cookie Facts)

Did you know today is National Cookie Day? Yes, we’re celebrating being a cookie monster by counting down our top five cookies. But before we get to that, the good folks at National Today conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans to learn some more about our cookie habits. Let’s dive into the data!

  • Oreos are America’s favorite cookie brand, with more than one out of three people picking the chocolate sandwich cookie over other store-bought packages like Chips Ahoy and Vanilla Wafers. But at 65%, the majority of Americans prefer a chewy cookie.
  • 33% of men and women admit to eating cookies a couple of times a week. 14% of men eat cookies multiple times a day (guilty) while only 8% of women do so.
  • 54% of Americans prefer homemade cookies to store-bought cookies. 7% have never baked their own cookies. I challenge that seven percent to fix that in 2020!
  • 43% of Americans have finished a whole row of Oreos in one sitting. Not gonna lie, I thought that number would be higher.

‘Tis the season to bake a lot of things that are full of sugar. Chances are you’ll have cookies in the oven at some point during the holidays. But are you making the best cookies you possibly can? Here are the top five cookies to make:

5. White Chocolate Macadamia Nut

Let’s start off the top five cookies list with white chocolate macadamia nut. In no world is white chocolate better than milk or dark chocolate. The closest the inferior chocolate comes is in the form of cookies because white chocolate macadamia nut cookies are pretty darn tasty. You can also argue that they’re actually good for you because of all the nuts contained within a single cookie. That’s some flawed logic, but hey, sometimes you need a little justification when you’ve eaten a dozen cookies before realizing what you’ve done.

4. Ginger Spice Cookies

WHAT A DARK HORSE. Ginger spice cookies make far fewer appearances than anything else on this list, but they’re such a delightful treat. Unlike straight up gingerbread cookies, you get a much nicer chew when you bite into one of these. And thanks to the presence of both molasses and brown sugar, ginger spice cookies are a lot heavier than most other kinds. That means you can limit yourself to only one or two, which is a huge plus in my book. Much like the cookie is a solid addition to any cookie library, Ginger Spice is also an underrated – yet critical – member of the Spice Girls.

3. Peanut Butter

Much like white chocolate macadamia nut cookies are good for you because of all the nuts, peanut butter cookies are packed with protein thanks to the copious amounts of peanut butter thrown into them. You really can’t argue with science. They also are quite consistent. Unless you passionately dislike peanut butter, it’s pretty easy to find an enjoyable peanut butter cookie.

2. Chocolate Chip

A timeless classic for a reason: chocolate chip cookies are delicious and it’s really hard to screw them up. Even better, you get to pop a handful of chips into your mouth while you’re baking. Getting to snack before your snack is a wonderful treat. The ideal gooeyness level for these should be “fairly gooey.” We’re not trying to make our fingers too sticky, but you want that satisfying chocolate chip spread when you break off a piece.

1. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip

Is this cheating because we’ve included both peanut butter and chocolate chip on here? Yeah, it probably is. But sometimes, you just can’t argue with the results. Peanut butter cookies are amazing. Chocolate chip cookies are amazing. When you combine them both? Well, now you’ve really got something incredible on your hands – and in your mouth, ideally, since that’s how cookies should be consumed. We’ll give a special shout-out here for Peanut Butter Blossoms, which are especially seasonal this time of year.
