Cooking Art with Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh has to be one of the most interesting figures in all of history. His life was full of turmoil and adventure, and it resulted in some gorgeous paintings. While Van Gogh wasn’t a cook, he certainly enjoyed eating.
Van Gogh suffered from an incredible array of ailments throughout his life: syphilis, schizophrenia, alcoholism, turpentine poisoning and epilepsy. Oh, and bad teeth, too, as well as consistent signs of depression. Despite his poor health, the artist understood that having a hearty meal daily was a critical part to…well, staying alive. Just like you and me, he knew food can bring a special kind of healing.
The Art Assignment to the Rescue
This entertaining video from The Art Assignment (a PBS Digital Studios production) seamlessly combines a historical lesson with tasty recipes. And there’s a little bit of relatability in here, too. Things take super long to cook, you’ll buy stuff from the store rather than growing it, and so on.
You’ll get to try things that feature in the Van Gogh paintings, like stewed potatoes, pan noir, chicken with mustard cream sauce, and we’ll top it all off with how to serve absinthe correctly. Bon appétit!
